Counselling & Psychology- Children and Adolescents
COUNSELLING FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
Our clinic’s trained Registered Social Workers will work with children/adolescents and their parents/guardians where there are emotional and behavioural concerns. The goal of counselling is to support and assist children/adolescents while adjusting to changes in family life or structure for example as well as learning coping strategies to manage difficult emotions and situations at home and/or school. Our clinic’s Registered Social Workers do not perform testing or diagnosing but rather treatment.
CONSENT
As per the Code of Ethics, where the child/adolescent is 15 years or under and does not have both parents residing in the same home, and/or custody is shared, we require parental permission via a signed consent form from the legal guardian(s). When there is no court order indicating legal guardianship then we require both parents signed consent. Parental consent forms are required to be signed by the first session and will be emailed to you ahead of time.
WHAT HAPPENS ON THE FIRST SESSION
For children/adolescents 15 and under, one or both parents attend the first session with the child. At this time everyone will have the opportunity to meet the Counsellor, talk about the presenting concerns, ask questions and become familiar with the space. Frequency of follow up sessions, limits of confidentiality and parental involvement will also be discussed in more detail at this time.
FOLLOW UP SESSIONS
Once the child/adolescent feels comfortable, parents can leave the room while the Counsellor works with the child/adolescent directly. Parents will be brought into the room the last few minutes of the session to discuss strategies taught and how they can help their child practice in between sessions.
